The effects of mode on interpreting performance in a simulated police interview

Abstract This study tested the effects of consecutive and simultaneous interpreting modes in a simulated police interview, addressing four research questions: (1) Does mode lead to more accurate than mode? (2) Do language combinations moderate performance similarly qualified interpreters? (3) experience legal settings increase accuracy SI? (4) Which do interpreters perceive require mental effort? A total 70 interpreted live interview between an English-speaking interviewer Arabic-, Mandarin- or Spanish-speaking suspect. Mode was varied within participants, order counter-balanced across participants. Interpreters rated their perceived effort after task. Independent assessments showed better results for mode, regardless language. effect held style, verbal rapport markers, protocol.
